Lagos State, Oct. 4, 2023 (NAN) In a bid to foster a clean, healthy and sustainable environment that will be conducive for tourism, economic growth and wellbeing of its citizenry, Environmental Health Officers of Lagos State continued sensitization and abatement of environmental infractions in Admiralty Way, Lekki, Eti-Osa Local Government Area (LGA).
This declaration was made in Lagos on Wednesday, 4th October, 2023 during the continued sensitization and abatement of environmental infractions exercise.
Sanitarian Ojei Francisca, Deputy Director, Environmental Health Services, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Office of Environmental services, applauded the leadership of Mr Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu led administration for his unrelenting commitment and dedication in creating a liveable and safer environment in Lagos State.
She said that the combination of Mr Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (MOE&WR), Mr Tokunbo Wahab would bring a massive development in the State, most especially in the area of environmental sanitation.
Sanitarian Ojei said that as part of the development in creating a safer and cleaner environment, Lagos state Environmental Health Directorate continued sensitization and abatement of environmental infractions against indecent use of the environment.
Sanitarian Ojei said that the upshot was in line with the Lagos state cleaner environment ‘THEMES PLUS’ Agenda of Mr Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu fostered by Mr Tokunbo Wahab, Honourable Commissioner for Environment.
She added that the abatement of environmental infractions in the area includes; littered, silted and blocked drainage channels, indiscriminate discharge of sewage into the public drain, construction of concrete on drainage setback alignment leading to the blockage of storm water inlet holes into the public drain thereby leading incessant flooding of the area, amongst others.
Earlier, Sanitarian Ajinibi Odunayo Oluwabusayo, the Assistant Director of Environmental Health Directorate, Office of Environmental Services, stated that the ultimate goal of clearing and de-silting all tertiary drainage channels is to allow easy passage of storm water which explains why the Government has made continuous reconstruction and widening of major primary and secondary drainage channels across the state a priority. Hitherto, contravention notices have been served and will continue to be served on property owners/occupiers for contravening the state environmental laws.
She added that the poor state of the drainage channels (heavily silted and blocked tertiary drainage channels) impedes free flow of storm water despite the continuous rehabilitation of the roads by the State Government.
She reiterated that the State Government has zero tolerance to all forms of environmental abuse such as Indiscriminate dumping of waste, blockage of drainage channels, street trading amongst others.
She implored Lagosians to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse into the drains, blockage of manholes and indiscriminate channelling of wastewater; adding that clogging of the drains has been compounded by the activities of residents who have turned many major drainage channels into waste dumps.
Sanitarian Ajinibi advised Lagosians to provide sanitary solid waste bins and dispose their waste properly by patronizing licensed PSP operators approved by Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and always ensure they tidy up their surrounding drainages of their premises as continuous environmental sustainability would be beneficial to all residents in the long run.
She added that the state government would not relent in her efforts to ensuring a cleaner, healthier, safer and liveable environment.
