-Seeks collaboration and intervention of government and companies involved...
The stakeholders meeting was to acknowledge the potential threat to the success of the huge projects and other businesses in the axis, citing the need for immediate short term and long term plans to facilitate smooth flow of traffic to and from Lekki Port, the refinery and other businesses, to aid smooth evacuation of cargoes and trucks.
Beginning the meeting, was a presentation by Engr. Ojowuro Olasunkanmi of the Ministry of Transportation, where he spoke about a proposal by the ministry to curtail short term and long term challenges, including the identification of the Red Zone, the management of Holding Bays, the introduction of an e-Call Up System, and other Benefits to the communities if implemented.
The presentation followed a series of questions, deliberations and proposals by all involved.
From the look of things, following recent trends, the Stakeholders were worried that the scenario could soon become a nightmare like the Apapa and Tin Can Island ports, which have defied every intervention till date.
As it stands, thousands of trucks are expected to make use of the already overburdened Ibeju Lekki/Lekki LCDA/Epe roads, which are presently undergoing construction across different zones, leaving residents to dread what comes next when the full operation comes on stream.
The stakeholders, expressed their worries over the slow response of the federal and state governments, including the companies, to provide the needed infrastructure to efficiently manage traffic and environmental challenges in the axis, noting alternative routes of exit for trucks and cargoes as another imperative, among others.
The Executive Chairman of Lekki LCDA, Hon. Rasaki Bamidele Kasali (RBK), drew attention to the main sustainability issues beyond the environmental impacts, highlighting the importance of carrying the local council and the communities along, and the importance of not just talking but starting to do something about the challenges.
He appealed that the people of the communities be listened to and that the government and the companies should ensure that the key roads are completed on time and should assist in ensuring the movement of consignments.
