Epe (Lagos State), Feb. 7, 2024 (NAN) Oba Rafiu Balogun, the Elejirin of Ejirin Kingdom, in Epe Division, has urged all tiers of government to regulate the prices of foodstuffs and other household commodities.
Balogun said that the measure would help to ameliorate the suffering of Nigerians, especially people at the grassroots.
He made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Ejirin, on Wednesday.
He noted that the economic hardships were biting harder by the day; a situation he said required government urgent attention.
"Nigerians are crying, people are lamenting, and cost of commodities and consumable items are skyrocketing day-by-day.
"Government needs to intervene to propound lasting solutions to these perennial internal challenges before it goes out of hand’’, he said.
The traditional ruler also appealed to government to release the reserve grains and other farm produce in their custody to farmers to boost food production.
"The government should also look into the fluctuating fuel and diesel prices in the market.
"Both the prices of food items and fuel/diesel needed to be checked and balanced by the government to ease the suffering of Nigerians, " he added.
He noted that prices rise up every day, and appealed to Nigerians to exercise patience as he believed in the economic planning of the President Tinubu-led administration.
"I so much believed in President Tinubu led administration but there is no development that will not come with pains.
"Nigerians should be patient, all will be well soonest’’, he said.
He implored all traders and market women and men not to increase food items and other commodities indiscriminately.
"Traders should have mercy on the masses and stop blaming the government for their inadequacy.
"Traders, business men and women should also support the government to make Nigeria'sconomy better for all’’, he said.
Balogun noted that the people at the grassroots were suffering the most; this present hardship is hitting harder on the masses especially people at the grassroots. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
