LASG sensitises public on cholera outbreak, prevention, control

Lagos State, June 23, 2024(NAN) Sanitarian Akeem Olaewe,

Director, Environmental Health in Ministry of the environment and water resources, has urged Lagos residents to heed to the directive, control and prevention measures by the government to curtail the wide spread of cholera within the city.


Olaewe disclosed this while addressing newsmen on Sunday, during the decontamination and fumigation of youth corps hostel at Iyana-Ipaja, Agege in preparation towards 2024 Batch 'B' Stream 1 Orientation Course of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).



He said that Lagos State government through the  Ministry of the environment and water resources has taken sensitization and public awareness campaign across the metropolis in the state.


He mentioned some of the areas earlier visited as; Lagos Island, Eti-Osa, ibeju-lekki, Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin, Kosofe among several others.


Olaewe noted that ministry of the Environment and water resources under the leadership of Mr Tokunbo Wahab  has alerted residents and urged them to be wary of the outbreak of cholera in some parts of the state, while urging everyone to embrace wholesome hygienic practices.


Olaewe stresses further that, since cholera only thrives in unhygienic conditions, all practices such as open defecation, drinking untreated water from unclean sources, improper disposal of refuse and not washing of hands with soap must be stopped.


He appealed to members of the public to own the process by ensuring that proper toilet facilities are provided in residences and when people are outdoors, public toilets or mobile toilets must be used. 


He stated that all tenements and property owners must prevent exposure of loose refuse, properly bag and  dispose of their wastes through Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) approved PSP operators to prevent flies from feasting on them.



Olaewe stated some of the measures put in place for public awareness and campaign on cholera prevention include; door to door sensitization campaigns around neighbourhoods and estates by environmental health officers.


Others as; public awareness campaigns to markets, schools, NYSC camps, public places, Police Barrack, parks amongst others.


The environmental health officer said that awareness campaigns are also being stepped up in the mass media through jingles in English, Yoruba and pidgin to drive the message to the hinterlands.


Olaewe commended Mr Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Honorable Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, Special Adviser to Mr Governor on Environment , Hon. Olalekan Rotimi-Akodu.


Others as;  Permanent Secretary, office of Environmental services, Dr Omobolaji Tajudeen-Gaji on a well done job in the fight against cholera outbreak in the state.


"I commend their prevention and control measures put in place to curtail wide spread of cholera within the city.


"Their proactiveness and swift responses to issues that concern the residents of Lagos state are commendable and acknowledged, " he said.


Olaewe urged residents of the state to cooperate with the government in the fight against this deadly disease(cholera), adding that residents should heed to government directive and  prevention control.(NAN).(www.nannews.ng).
