Okun Ajah residents protest over Coastal road diversion

In a bold display of solidarity and determination, residents of Okun Ajah community in Lagos State recently staged a massive protest against the proposed diversion of the Coastal Road alignment. Despite heavy rainfall, hundreds of residents gathered in front of the Federal Ministry of Works headquarters to voice their resistance against the decision made by the Minister of Works, David Umahi.

The protesters expressed their grievances, emphasizing that the proposed diversion favored certain individuals over others and disregarded longstanding plans dating back to 2006. Displaying placards with powerful messages such as "Illegal construction on the right of way should not be encouraged" and "Honourable minister, no ethnic sentiment, keep to your words," the residents called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Assembly to investigate the matter thoroughly.

Saeed Olukosi, the Akogun of Okun Ajah, strongly condemned the planned diversion, describing it as a miscarriage of justice. He highlighted that while houses built on the Coastal Road alignment were marked for demolition, construction workers diverted their efforts to a new area, causing confusion and concern among the community members.

The protesters demanded transparency and adherence to the original 2006 alignment, holding the authorities accountable for their promises to the community. The determination and unity displayed by the residents of Okun Ajah serve as a reminder of the importance of community engagement and civic action in safeguarding the interests of the people at large.
