President Bola Tinubu has been re-elected as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of States and Government for a second one-year term. The unanimous decision was made by fellow Heads of Government at the 65th Ordinary Session held at the State House in Abuja on Sunday.
In his acceptance speech, President Tinubu pledged to focus on consolidating democratic values and upholding the interest of the regional body, which will clock 50 years in 2025. He also appointed the President of Senegal, His Excellency, Mr. Bassirou Diomaye Faye, and the President of Togo, His Excellency, Mr. Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, as Special Envoys to Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic.
President Tinubu appealed to member states to provide financial support in the battle against terrorism in the region, stressing the need for both political will and substantial financial resources to combat terrorism through the ECOWAS Standby Force (ESF). He urged member states to follow through on commitments made by their defence and finance ministers to stabilize the region.
The re-election of President Tinubu as ECOWAS Chairman is seen as a vote of confidence in his leadership and a testament to his commitment to regional integration and stability.
