Akinlade And Allies Say ‘Not In 2027’ To Adebutu’s Governorship Dreams

Adekunle Akinlade, the Deputy Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 Ogun governorship election, has opposed Ladi Adebutu’s potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.

Despite their joint ticket in the March 18, 2023 election, where they were defeated by incumbent APC governor Dapo Abiodun, Akinlade made it clear that the party does not support Adebutu’s ambition for the 2027 election. Although Adebutu has yet to publicly declare his intention to run, tensions between the two political figures have surfaced regarding the next election.

Speaking to reporters after the PDP congress, Akinlade, popularly known as Triple A, confirmed that a parallel congress had taken place, describing it as a strategic move to counter Adebutu’s 2027 aspirations. He argued that Adebutu, who hails from Ikenne Local Government, the same area as Governor Dapo Abiodun, should not run for governor again in 2027.

“We know that Hon. Ladi Adebutu is spending billions to push his ambition at various levels,” Akinlade said. “However, as key stakeholders in Ogun PDP—myself, Hon. Sikirula Ogundele, Otunba Jimi Lawal, Hon. Dimeji Fabiyi, and hundreds of party leaders across the state—we have decided to put Ogun State first.”

Akinlade further emphasized that with Governor Abiodun set to complete his two terms in 2027, it would be unacceptable for another candidate from the same local government to contest so soon. “Adebutu can run in 2031, 2035, or 2029—just not in 2027,” he stated.

He also highlighted recent parallel ward and local government congresses, noting the success of the state congress held on September 28, 2024, as part of their broader strategy.
