Former House Speaker Yakubu Dogara has clarified President Bola Tinubu's remarks on fuel subsidy removal, stating they were made in jest.

 

During a Channels TV interview, Dogara noted that Tinubu did not remove the subsidy, as the National Assembly-approved budget did not provide for it prior to his election. 

Dogara emphasized that Tinubu's statement lacked concrete policy action. He explained that subsidy removal was impossible without budgetary allocation. 

Dogara acknowledged the removal's effects on Nigerians but considers it crucial for national progress, highlighting the need for collective sacrifice and solution-focused discussions. 

President Tinubu had announced subsidy removal during his May 29, 2023, inaugural address, referencing its omission from the national budget starting June 2023.
