Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has clarified that the arrest of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, is unrelated to a previous invitation extended to him by the Nigeria Police Force.
Reports emerged that operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) apprehended Ajaero on Monday morning at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. Ajaero was en route to the United Kingdom to attend a conference organized by the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Britain.
Commenting on the situation, Falana disclosed that the DSS has yet to provide any reason for the arrest of his client. "The invitation to Comrade Joe Ajaero by the police was rescheduled last week. I have contacted the police authorities, and they have confirmed that the arrest is not connected to the police invitation," Falana stated.
He further elaborated, "Comrade Ajaero was on his way to London to attend the ongoing TUC conference when he was arrested at the airport this morning by the DSS. No reason has been provided for the arrest."
It is important to note that on August 29, Ajaero had responded to a police summons regarding allegations of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime. However, Falana emphasized that the current detention by the DSS is separate from that earlier police inquiry.
The arrest has sparked concerns among labor and human rights communities, raising questions about the circumstances and motivations behind the DSS's actions. The NLC is yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
