Lagos Assembly to Hold Second Public Hearing on LG Administration Bill, Invites Attorney-General for Supreme Court Judgement Interpretation

The Lagos State House of Assembly has agreed to hold a second public hearing on the bill reviewing the Local Government Administration law. This decision, made at a sitting presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, aims to strengthen the Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), not abolish them.

The House invited the Attorney-General, Lawal Pedro, to interpret the recent Supreme Court judgment on financial autonomy for local governments, with a focus on the Lagos LGs and LCDAs’ joint accounts.

Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Administration, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development reported that many stakeholders missed the first public hearing due to poor weather, prompting the need for another session.

Other members, including Hon. Ladi Ajomale, urged better communication with the public to address concerns about the government’s intentions and called for collaboration with the National Assembly to list LCDAs as full local governments. Hon. Desmond Elliot stressed Lagos’s population and economic significance, emphasizing the need for fair recognition of its LCDAs.
