The College of Specialized and Professional Education (COSPED), Lagos State University of Education,(LASUED) held its inaugural Best Global Practices Conference today, November 12, 2024, at the 250 seater Conference Hall in Odo Noforija, Epe campus. Themed "Rethinking Nigerian Education System for Best Global Practices," the conference assembled educators, government officials, and stakeholders to address pressing issues and future strategies in Nigerian education.
The Vice-Chancellor, represented by Ag. Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) Dr. M.A. Daodu, underscored the importance of a collective effort towards a successful upcoming Accreditation exercise, emphasizing teamwork as critical to achieving desired outcomes.
In her welcome address, Dr. Asikhia Olubusayo expressed profound gratitude to the university management, led by Vice Chancellor Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, for their steadfast support. She extended special thanks to Dr. Melekeowei P. Dele, Dean of the College of Specialized and Professional Education, (COSPED) for his dedication to organizing the conference. Dr. Asikhia also acknowledged the Local Organizing Committee and thanked sponsors and supporters whose contributions reflect a commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s educational landscape.
Dr. Asikhia stated that the conference would serve as a vital platform for collaborative dialogue on improving Nigerian education. The programme includes discussions from esteemed experts on innovative teaching, technology integration, inclusive education, and educational leadership best practices. She highlighted the importance of networking, encouraging participants to form professional connections and engage in discussions that lead to tangible, actionable solutions. Emphasizing technology’s role in amplifying the conference’s impact, she encouraged attendees to share insights on social media using the hashtag #COSPED2024.
Keynote speaker Hon. Tolani Sule through a Director in the ministry, Mrs Oluwakemi Kalesanwo described the conference theme as “thought-provoking and urgently relevant.” He urged the audience to take bold and innovative actions to improve Nigeria’s education system, drawing comparisons with global leaders in education. He noted that while Nigeria has made strides in curriculum reform and technology integration, there is still significant progress to be made. He applauded Lagos State's commitment to transforming tertiary institutions, exemplified by the recent transitions of Lagos State University of Education, Lagos State University of Science and Technology, and the newly established Lagos State University of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Hon. Sule concluded by reiterating his commitment as Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Institutions to driving initiatives that prioritize excellence, relevance, and quality in education. He emphasized that students deserve a learning environment that nurtures their abilities and prepares them for the global stage, with Lagos State University of Education serving as a benchmark for excellence.
The conference aims to inspire lasting change and contribute to shaping a Nigerian education system that meets global standards, equipping future generations to innovate and lead confidently.
