The College of Specialized and Professional Education (COSPED), Lagos State University of Education,  held its maiden conference today, November 12, 2024, at the 360 Conference Hall, Odo-Noforija, Epe Campus. The event, themed “Rethinking the Nigerian Education System for Best Global Practices,” gathered educational leaders, government officials, and key stakeholders in Nigerian education to discuss strategies for aligning Nigeria’s educational standards with global best practices.


Representing the Vice Chancellor, Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, the Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Dr. M.A. Daudu, emphasized the need for collective effort towards the upcoming Accreditation exercise, a pivotal step in achieving the institution’s vision for academic excellence.


Dr. Asikhia Olubusayo, in her opening remarks, expressed gratitude to the university’s management under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Professor Lafiaji-Okuneye, and to Dr. Melekeowei P. Dele, Dean of COSPED, for their support in bringing the conference to fruition. She also extended thanks to the event’s sponsors and Local Organizing Committee for their dedication and contributions.


The conference is a platform for critical dialogue about the future of Nigerian education. Attendees will engage with experts on innovative teaching, technology integration, inclusive education, and educational leadership best practices over the coming days. Dr. Asikhia encouraged participants to network, exchange ideas, and actively contribute to creating tangible solutions to Nigeria’s educational challenges, aiming for policy recommendations, research collaborations, and capacity-building strategies.


Highlighting the transformative potential of technology, Dr. Asikhia urged attendees to share their experiences online with the official hashtag #COSPED2024, to broaden the conference’s impact and inclusivity.


Honorable Tolani Sule, Commissioner for Tertiary Education ably represented a Director in the ministry,  Mrs Oluwakemi Kalesanwo while delivering the keynote address, noted the urgent relevance of the conference theme, calling for bold innovation and decisive action. Comparing Nigeria’s education system with global standards, praised Lagos State’s progress in educational reform, including curriculum updates, skills development, and technology integration highlighted the recent upgrades of Lagos State University of Education, Lagos State University of Science and Technology, and the newly established Lagos State University of Medicine and Health Sciences, as markers of Lagos’ commitment to educational excellence.


As the Lagos State Commissioner of Tertiary Institutions, Hon. Sule reaffirmed the commitment to initiatives that enhance educational quality and relevance, ensuring Nigerian students learn in environments that nurture their abilities and prepare them for global success. He concluded with a vision for COSPED’s efforts to inspire meaningful change in Nigeria’s education system, preparing future generations for leadership and innovation on a global scale.
