…Denies Allegations Of Multibillion Naira Fraud
The recent impeachment saga of the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has stirred up controversy as he claims that due process was not followed in his removal from office. Obasa, who was impeached by 20 out of the 40 members of the Assembly on allegations of financial impropriety, has vehemently denied the accusations and is challenging the legality of his impeachment.
In a press statement released by Obasa's media aide, the former Speaker expressed his disappointment with the way his impeachment was carried out, stating that he was not given a fair hearing and that proper procedures were not followed. He argues that he was not given the opportunity to defend himself against the allegations leveled against him, which he claims are baseless and politically motivated.
This developing story is a reminder of the importance of due process in any judicial or legislative proceedings. It is essential for the principles of fairness, justice, and transparency to be upheld, especially when it comes to matters as serious as impeachment. Without following due process, there is a risk of abuse of power and miscarriage of justice.
The case of Mudashiru Obasa's impeachment highlights the need for accountability and transparency in government institutions. It serves as a cautionary tale for those in positions of power that they are not above the law and must be accountable for their actions. Only by upholding the principles of due process can we ensure a just and democratic society.
The allegations of financial impropriety against Mudashiru Obasa and his subsequent impeachment raise important questions about the rule of law and proper governance. It is imperative that the legal and constitutional processes be followed to uphold the principles of justice and fairness. The outcome of this case will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications for the future of politics in Lagos State and beyond.
Obasa, who returned to Lagos today to the cheering of his supporters, said it was important for the lawmakers to “follow constitutional procedure” to remove him as speaker.
Reacting to allegations of multibillion naira corruption levelled against him as part of the reasons for his removal, Obasa described the alleged financial misappropriations as “impossible.”
“I am not disturbed, I am not afraid,” Obasa said of the “Developments that happened at the assembly.”
Obasa spoke to a huge crowd of supporters at the Speaker’s Lodge, 47, GRA Ikeja Lagos.
Following Obasa’s removal while he was away in the United States of America, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda from Apapa 01 Constituency was sworn-in as the new Speaker. Meranda was the deputy speaker to Obasa.
Meranda had since secured the acceptance of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC), a powerful group within the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
