Landmark College Student, Michelle Nwankwo, Secures First Position in 2024 African Under-12 Chess Championship

 


Landmark College Student, Michelle Nwankwo, currently secured first place in ranking for African Under-12 female Chess players and Second position in the just concluded National Chess Championship(Females), held in December 2024 in Lagos Nigeria.


Michelle Nwankwo, an 11-year-old Junior Secondary School 1 (JS1) student at Landmark College, Ikorodu, has made waves in the chess world with her stellar performance at the Nigeria National Chess Championship 2024 (#NCC2024).


As the youngest and one of the most formidable competitors in the women's section, Michelle scored an impressive 8 out of 11 points, securing second place among some of Nigeria’s finest chess players.


Coming into the championship as the best junior female player and the ninth-seeded participant, Michelle demonstrated exceptional skill, resilience, and composure.


Her performance has earned her the title of the most impressive female player after the Women’s National Chess Champion.


Michelle’s achievements extend beyond the national stage.


She is currently ranked number one in Africa for under-12 players and holds the seventh position globally in the same category.


These accolades make her one of the most decorated young chess players in Nigeria, having previously been crowned the National Primary School Chess Champion.


The OLCC team congratulated Michelle on her remarkable feat, saying, "We encourage her to keep fighting forward."
