Tax reform is essential for economic growth and development - Engr. Adigun Ibrahim Olalekan Chairman NYCN Lagos State Chapter

 


Lagostrend Report that the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Lagos recently launched the Lagos Youth Talks Series, aiming to sensitize young people on tax reform bills. This initiative is crucial in ensuring that the youth are informed and engaged in discussions around important economic policies that directly impact their lives. 


Tax reform bills are significant because they play a key role in shaping the economic landscape of a country. By educating young people about these bills, NYCN Lagos is empowering them to understand the implications of tax changes, how they affect their income, and the overall economy. This knowledge is essential for the youth to participate in meaningful debates and advocate for policies that align with their interests.


The launch of the Lagos Youth Talks Series is a commendable effort by NYCN Lagos to bridge the information gap that often exists between decision-makers and young people. By creating a platform for dialogue and education, the organization is fostering a culture of civic engagement and responsibility among the youth. This is particularly important in a country like Nigeria, where youth empowerment and participation in governance are crucial for sustainable development.



As we move towards a more inclusive and participatory society, initiatives like the Lagos Youth Talks Series are essential for building a more informed and active youth population. By engaging young people in discussions about tax reform bills, NYCN Lagos is not only promoting financial literacy but also laying the foundation for a more economically empowered generation.


The advocacy took center stage when the youth group under the leadership of Engr. Adigun Ibrahim Olalekan flagged off its Lagos Youth Talk Series at the Youth House in Alagomeji Yaba, on Thursday.


The event themed ‘Tax Reform Bills: Understanding the Gains’ was organized in partnership with the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development and it featured enlightenment talks by tax experts which included the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Taxation Mr. Abdulkabir Ogunbo as represented by the Director of Monitoring and Investigation at the State Treasury Office, Mr Tajudeen Mahmud; Mr. Ayodele Subair, Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service who had Mr. Olugbenga Obatola stood in for him, Dr. Saka Jimoh, an Associate Professor of Economics at Lagos State University (LASU), and Miss Damilola Ojebode, Manager of Tax Regulatory and People’s Services at KPMG.


The speakers took turns to delve into key components of the bills especially their numerous benefits to Nigerian youths.


The Lagos Youth Talk Series, according to Comr. Adigun Ibrahim, Chairman NYCN Lagos was aimed at taming the rising misconceptions, misinformation, and misunderstandings among the general public about the bills.


Adigun explained that the thought-shaping forum which will be held periodically to address topical issues as they affect the youths and the general populace is another aspect of his P3+ Agenda of his administration to effectively tackle misinformation and foster effective communication between government and the people. 

He underscored how the program aligns with the THEMES+ agenda of the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu as it concerns Youth Inclusivity to ensure that more youths are brought on board with adequate knowledge that will further promote development in Lagos State and Nigeria at large.


On their part, the Lagos State Commissioner for Youths and Social Development, Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Pharm. (Mrs) Oluwatoyin Oke-Osanyitolu lauded the youth group for the initiative as they expressed their delight to have provided support for the success of the event.


Also in attendance at the event were other top government officials, which included the immediate past Chairman of the youth group and now Senior Special Assistant to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Social Development, Comrade Biliaminu Oba, his counterpart, the SSA on Tertiary Education, Comrade Kappo Samuel; the SSA on Basic and Secondary Education, Comrade Opeyemi Eniola; the SSA on Wealth Creation, Ambassador Saheed Tijani; the Youth Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Muritala Seriki, coordinators of NYCN across the 57 local branches, and leaders of numerous youth organizations among others


 The launch of the Lagos Youth Talks Series by the NYCN Lagos is a positive step towards empowering young people with knowledge and information about tax reform bills. By sensitizing the youth on these important economic policies, the organization is contributing to building a more informed and engaged youth population in Nigeria.
