The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Edo State has launched an attack on Adams Oshiomhole, former National of the party, saying it lost the governorship election in the state because of his arrogance and the “needless” crisis he foisted on the party.
The party said this while congratulating Godwin Obaseki, Edo governor, for his victory at the poll in a statement on Tuesday.
Obaseki, candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, polled 307,955 votes to defeat Osagie Ize-Iyamu, candidate of the APC, who secured 223,619 votes.
The governor was disqualified from contesting the APC primary election after he fell out with Oshiomhole. Both men were at loggerheads for months over issues concerning Edo.
But Obaseki defected to the PDP where he ran for the office of governor and won.
Anslem Ojezua, chairman of Edo APC, blamed “arrogant and irresponsible leadership” for the crisis that caused the party’s loss at the poll.
While congratulating Obaseki on his win, Ojezua said steps should be taken to “salvage the well being of our party in the state”.
“We join President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Caretaker Committee of our great Party to congratulate Governor Godwin Obasekl and his Deputy Rt. Hon. Philip Shalbu for their victory at the just concluded Governorship election in Edo state,” the chairman said.
“The election has been generally acclaimed to be peaceful, orderly and transparent. The people of Edo State have made their choice In a very clear and unambiguous manner.
“Our loss at the poll stems from the needles and avoidable crisis foisted on the party by a selfish, insensitive, arrogant and irresponsible leadership.
“While we begin to take steps to try and salvage the well being of our party in the state, we call on the governor to be magnanimous in victory while we urge all those who contested to sheathe their swords and put the elections behind us.
“We must all and close ranks with the government in order to ensure a seamless transition to the final lap of governance in the State without being subjected to any further needless distraction and rancour.
“The establishment of a robust infrastructural base to guarantee economic growth at this critical time must be the paramount consideration and in the best interest of the good people of Edo state.”
SCOOPER yesterday reported that members of APC in Ekiti state accused the State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, of installing Obaseki as Governor of Edo State.
The APC members said Fayemi, “after installing” Godwin Obaseki as the governor of Edo State” in a clear case of anti-party act, is bent on expelling leaders of the party.”
The APC stakeholders in Ekiti, whose face-off with Governor Fayemi has lasted for several months now, accused the governor of not only bent on sacking them but also indulging in anti-party activities.
The stakeholders were responding to the recent invitation for them to appear before a state panel for their alleged disobedience to the party’s directive and failure to withdraw cases instituted against the party in court.
The invitation was extended to 11 of them including the special adviser on political matters to President Muhammadu Buhari, Babafemi Ojudu.
But in a statement signed by Bamgboye Adegoroye, the politicians said:
“A curious process is taking place in the Ekiti State branch of our progressive party. Our governor and the chairman of Nigeria’s Governors Forum, Dr Kayode Fayemi, after installing the governor of Edo State in a clear case of anti-party, is bent on expelling leaders of the party.
“Towards achieving this purpose he (Fayemi) has set up a committee of his adulators to put us on trial in a predetermined process. The committee is chairmanned by one Mr Ajigbolamu who recently left the PDP to join our party. We also know that the affairs of the committee is managed by the office of the Attorney General Mr. Wale Fapounda, his anointed for the position of governor when his term is over in 2022.”
They said Fayemi was paying them for supporting him by punishing them, citing how the governor appointed new executives of the party in a private home in Iyin-Ekiti, an act the stakeholders said, violated the constitution of the party.
“We demanded of him the dissolution of this product of illegality and institution of a legitimate executive in compliance with our party’s constitution. We intimated our party leaders of these concerns; the same problem which was present in his first term that led to our losing the state to PDP with ignominy in the year 2014.”
