“After my movie Jenifa, they called us to Ghana and paid me millions, which made me happy because I had never earned that much from any movie.
When we arrived in Ghana, nobody recognized me. I used to act mostly in Yoruba movies, and I wasn’t that popular, so we travelled to Ghana with other actresses like Ini Edo. I was with my kid sister, who was my PA, as i didn’t have a manager.
They were snapping pictures with other actresses, and my kid sister said, ‘Sister, they don’t know you ohhh.’
I told her, ‘Next year, I will be known. I’m going to work towards that, and I will be known outside Nigeria.’ She answered, ‘Amen.’
While there, I was only calculating how to go about it. Then, I went back home and told myself, ‘If I must be recognized, I have to speak in English and add a little Yoruba.’
And that’s how I won. I’m not where I want to be yet, but I’m not where I was yesterday.”
