The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Epe Branch, held its April management meeting on Saturday, 5th April, 2025 with a strong focus on public health, youth development and community concerns. The meeting brought together executive members and stakeholders to deliberate on critical issues affecting the Epe community and to strategize on collective actions for impactful youth engagement.
A major highlight of the meeting was the call for increased awareness and preventive care against diphtheria, following alarming reports of the outbreak in various parts of Nigeria. The council urged the public to prioritize vaccination and hygiene practices. In alignment with national guidelines, members were encouraged to support sensitization efforts across communities and schools to educate residents about the symptoms, transmission and prevention of diphtheria.
In addition to the diphtheria awareness talk, several key issues were discussed as part of the agenda:
* *1. School Sensitization -* Plans were made to intensify outreach to primary and secondary schools in Epe on key issues including health, substance abuse, violence and leadership development.
2. *Skill for All –* The council reviewed its “Skill For All” initiative, which aims to empower Epe youths through vocational training, digital skills, and entrepreneurship programs.
3. *Electricity –* Members expressed concern over the poor electricity supply in parts of Epe and resolved to further engage relevant authorities and stakeholders to find lasting solutions.
4. *Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Epe –* Discussions were held on the need to fast-track the full operation of the Federal Medical Centre, as it would significantly boost healthcare access for residents.
5. *Fights amidst Secondary School Students –* The council condemned the increasing cases of violence and cult-like activities in some secondary schools and resolved to work with school administrators, security agencies and parents to restore discipline and order.
The meeting concluded with a unanimous commitment to take proactive steps on all discussed matters. Members were also reminded of their individual and collective roles in creating a safer, healthier and more empowered Epe community.
The council appreciated all members for their commitment and presence at the meeting, reaffirming that unity and consistency remain the backbone of progress.
