Rauf Aregbesola, the interim National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), recently addressed party members in Lagos following his return from Abuja. He was welcomed by a crowd of enthusiastic supporters at the Murtala Muhammed Airport.
Aregbesola’s return to Lagos comes shortly after his appointment to the key leadership position within the ADC, which is positioned as a new opposition coalition aimed at the 2027 general elections. The ADC is reportedly attracting prominent political figures and is seeking to challenge the current administration of President Bola Tinubu.
In his address, Aregbesola advised ADC supporters to focus on issues and facts rather than engaging in insults or personal attacks against members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He urged them to challenge the APC with facts about the country’s economic challenges, such as food inflation, rising cost of living, and deepening poverty.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining a high level of discourse and articulating the ADC’s position clearly and confidently, explaining why the party represents a credible alternative for Nigeria’s progress.
Aregbesola drew inspiration from South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC), highlighting its character and soul, which he contrasted with what he described as a lack of ideological depth in many Nigerian political parties.
It’s worth noting that Aregbesola, a former Minister of Interior and two-term Governor of Osun State, was previously a prominent member of the APC before aligning with the ADC.
“We know how to take over Lagos from APC, we have been here in the past and we know how it’s been done, Lagos will be my second home now.”
