Epe (Lagos State), Aug. 15, 2025 (NAN) Oba(Dr) Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, the Alara of Ilara Kingdom in Epe Division, has empowered 300 indigenes with sewing machines, grinders, hair dryers, and other vocational equipment to promote self-reliance.
The empowerment items was presented on Friday, during the day-one activities marking his 5th coronation anniversary in Ilara.
The initiative was facilitated by Olori Bolanle Ogunsanwo, wife of the traditional ruler, in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and a nongovernmental organisation.
Ogunsanwo said that the gesture was aimed at providing sustainable livelihood opportunities and reducing dependency among the beneficiaries.
“No fewer than 300 residents and Indigenes benefitted from the empowerment program.
“My advice for the beneficiaries is to make best use of the equipment giving to them for self sustainance, ” he said.
Similarly, Prof. John Obafunwa, Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) disclosed that over 300 indigenes and residents benefited from a free medical outreach held as part of the anniversary programme.
He said that the outreach included; free eye tests and glasses, dental care, blood sugar and blood pressure checks, as well as the provision of drugs for various ailments.
“This medical initiative was designed to ensure our people are physically and medically fit.
“I have both education and medical backgrounds, and it is my duty to give back to my community,” he said.
He added that the day’s activities began with a community fitness walk, followed by Jumat prayers, and courtesy visits to the palace by community members.
The celebrations would continue on Saturday, Aug. 16, with the conferment of chieftaincy titles on distinguished personalities.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Fatimah Agbomeji, lauded the organisers for the medical outreach.
“I have been having eye problems, but I received free eye glasses today. I am happy and relieved,” she said.
Another beneficiary, Mr Jamiu Adekoya, expressed gratitude after receiving dental treatment.
“I had a tooth problem that was causing me severe pain. The medical personnel helped remove it at no cost.
“I thank the organisers for this rare opportunity,” he said.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng).
