Chairman South East Development Commission (SEDC), Senator Orji Uzor Kalu who represents Abia North Senatorial Zone, has expressed his backing for the creation of Anioma State from the current Delta State, making it the sixth state for the Southeast region. Speaking on Channels Television on Monday, the former governor of Abia State stated that creating this new state from Anioma would help alleviate frustration regarding the perceived marginalization of the Igbo people.
“Of course, Anioma State should be created as the sixth South-East state. It’s the only state that will be viable to be created,”
“Anioma are Igbos and they never said they are not Igbos. The sixth South-East state should be created, and it should be from Anioma,” Senator Kalu said.
Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North, has proposed the creation of Anioma State, aiming to “rectify historical neglect.” He explained that the establishment of Anioma State would help correct the long-standing imbalance in the distribution of states across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones. Senator Nwoko pointed out that the South-East currently has five states, in contrast to other regions, except the North-West, which has seven states.
