The political tension in Rivers State has escalated as the State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, has given Governor Siminalayi Fubara a 48-hour ultimatum to sack all commissioners and other appointees who were not screened and confirmed by the legislature.
In a resolution passed during its 131st Legislative Sitting on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, the lawmakers accused the governor of violating the Constitution by appointing individuals into key positions without legislative approval.
The Assembly highlighted several cases of appointments made in breach of constitutional provisions, including the swearing-in of commissioners and members of the State Local Government Service Commission and the Rivers State Bureau on Public Procurement.
Furthermore, the lawmakers directed the governor to submit a fresh list of nominees for screening and confirmation within the same 48-hour deadline, warning that failure to comply would have serious legal and political consequences.
The development marks another chapter in the ongoing power struggle between Governor Fubara and lawmakers aligned with former Governor Nyesom Wike, raising concerns about governance stability in Rivers State.
