The spirit of compassion and community service took center stage as a Free Medical Mission was held at the First Epe Central Mosque, Oke-Balogun, as part of the activities commemorating the 175th Anniversary of the Epe Kayokayo Festival.

Lagostrend reports that the outreach underscored the festival’s commitment not only to preserving the rich cultural heritage of Epe but also to promoting the health and well-being of its people. The initiative reinforced the message that a healthy population is the foundation of a stronger and more prosperous community.

Hundreds of residents, including elderly citizens, children, nursing mothers and other vulnerable members of the community, benefited from the exercise. They received free medical consultations, health screenings, medications and professional advice from medical personnel.

A major highlight of the programme was an extensive health education session on the importance of good oral and dental hygiene, encouraging residents to adopt healthier habits for improved long-term well-being.

Beneficiaries expressed deep appreciation to the organizers for bringing quality healthcare services directly to the community. Later in the evening, the celebration shifted from healthcare to culture as the people of Oke-Balogun converged at the Epe Marina Waterfront for the historic Etufu Lighting Procession. The colourful procession drew residents, traditional chiefs, youths and visitors, creating an atmosphere filled with pride, unity and cultural reverence.

During the event, community leaders highlighted the historical significance of the Etufu and the Kayokayo Festival, recounting the story of the arrival of King Kosoko in Epe and how the annual festival has continued to preserve the legacy, traditions and identity of the Epe people for generations. They urged the younger generation to uphold the values of peace, unity and cultural preservation that the festival represents.

The combination of the Free Medical Mission and the historic Etufu Lighting Procession reflected the enduring values of the Epe Kayokayo Festival, demonstrating that celebrating a people’s heritage goes beyond colourful displays—it also means investing in the health, welfare and future of the community while preserving its rich history.
