The Oyo State political landscape has been thrown into mourning following the death of Alhaji Abdul Waheed Akintola Olajide, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Secretary to the Oyo State Government under the administration of the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi.
Olajide reportedly passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. While reports differ on his exact age, with some sources putting it at 74 and others at 80, his death has been widely described as a significant loss to his family, political associates, the Muslim community and Oyo State.
His family, in a statement issued on Wednesday, August 26, confirmed his death and described him as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and cousin. The family expressed gratitude to God for his life and appealed to friends, associates and members of the public to remember the deceased and the family in their prayers.
Olajide was subsequently buried in Ibadan on Wednesday in accordance with Islamic burial rites.
Reacting to the development, media personality Faysol Oluwakemi expressed deep sadness over the death of the former SSG, describing him not only as a political elder but also as a father figure and mentor.
Oluwakemi recalled that both men belonged to the same Progressive political family and hailed from Ward 3 in Ibadan Southwest Constituency 1. He said Olajide played an important role in his political journey, particularly during consultations ahead of the 2027 Oyo State House of Assembly election.
According to Oluwakemi, the late political leader continued to encourage and counsel him even after he was unsuccessful in securing his party’s ticket.
He recalled one of Olajide’s pieces of advice to him: that he possessed the qualities needed to represent the constituency and should, whenever given the opportunity, serve with dignity, transparency and inclusion.
Describing the late former SSG as a man whose words and guidance would continue to influence those he mentored, Oluwakemi concluded his tribute with the words: “Rest well, Baba SSG. Your words will continue to guide me.”
The death of Alhaji Waheed Olajide has therefore left a deep void among his family, political associates and members of the community, with tributes continuing to pour in as mourners remember his contributions to public service and political development in Oyo State.
