Authorities in Kaduna State have confirmed the arrest of a suspect following a disturbing incident in Zaria involving a 20-year-old resident, Aliyu Nuhu, who sustained severe injuries after an alleged assault by members of a local vigilante group.

According to the family, Aliyu was apprehended over accusations of stealing a chicken and subsequently detained. His father, Mallam Salisu Nuhu, disclosed that the young man was allegedly subjected to severe maltreatment while in custody and was only released after the family was unable to meet a bail demand.

In a particularly troubling development, a five-inch nail was reportedly embedded in Aliyu’s skull during the ordeal. The injury remained untreated for 13 days before he underwent a critical surgical procedure. The family has stated that they expended over ₦800,000 on medical care to save his life.

Aliyu has since identified one Nuhu Dan Banga as one of the alleged perpetrators. The Kaduna State Police Command has confirmed that one suspect has been arrested in connection with the case, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend another individual believed to be involved.

The police have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway and that anyone found culpable will be made to face the full weight of the law. Authorities also reiterated their commitment to upholding human rights and ensuring that community-based security outfits operate strictly within the confines of the law.

Community leaders and civil society organizations have called for calm while emphasizing the need for justice and accountability. They have also urged residents to allow law enforcement agencies to carry out their duties without interference.

Aliyu Nuhu is currently recovering following surgery, as investigations continue.
