The Lagos State Government has announced a major plan to revolutionize its Agricultural Input Supply Authority (LAISA). The goal is to turn LAISA into the number one central hub in Nigeria where farmers can get all their essential, high-quality agricultural supplies in one place. This move is a core part of the state’s strategy to strengthen food security not just for Lagos, but for the entire country.

What is the Problem Being Solved?

Folake Oluyemi, the General Manager of LAISA, explained that one of the biggest challenges farmers face today is the difficulty in finding and affording high-grade agricultural inputs. She noted that having access to good quality supplies can be the deciding factor between a successful, profitable harvest and a failed one.

    What is LAISA’s New Plan?

To solve this problem, LAISA is adopting a new, more efficient approach to its supply chain. The authority will focus on making sure that farmers in Lagos have easy and consistent access to vital tools and materials. These include:

    • Premium Fertilizers: To enrich the soil and improve crop yield.

    • High-Yield Hybrid Seeds: Specially developed seeds that produce more crops.

    • Knapsack Sprayers: For effective application of pesticides and herbicides.

    • Outboard Engines: To power boats for farmers in riverine areas.

    • Specialized Fish Feeds: To support the aquaculture sector.
    Listening to the Farmers

To ensure that the government’s efforts truly meet the needs of the farming community, LAISA is actively engaging with farmers at the grassroots level. The agency is organizing a series of “Farmers’ Forums” across all five administrative divisions of Lagos State.

According to the General Manager, the very first forum, held in Ikorodu, was a huge success. The large turnout allowed the agency to get direct, valuable feedback about the specific problems farmers are dealing with. The aim is to build a strong, supportive relationship with farmers that is more than just a simple transaction.

    Modernizing the System

LAISA is also looking to use technology to improve its services. The agency is exploring digital platforms that would allow farmers to order and receive their supplies more easily. This modernization will help to:

    • Reduce waiting times for supplies. • Cut out extra costs from middlemen.
    • Ensure that even small-scale farmers in remote areas can access government-subsidized rates and quality products.

Government Support and a Bigger Vision

This ambitious transformation is being driven by the strong support of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems. This initiative is a key part of the larger Lagos State Agricultural Roadmap, which aims to make the state more self-sufficient in food production. By making sure farmers have the right tools at the right time, Lagos is not only empowering them individually but is also building a stronger, more reliable food system for everyone.
