The Osun State University (UNIOSUN) community and the people of Modakeke have been thrown into mourning following the tragic death and burial of Miss Grace Osunlakin, a final-year student whose promising future was cut short.
Grace, an indigene of Modakeke and a final-year student, was laid to rest in her hometown as family members, friends, colleagues, and sympathizers gathered to pay their final respects. Her passing has left a deep sense of grief among members of the university community and beyond.
In a preliminary report, the management of UNIOSUN outlined the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.
According to the university, Grace successfully completed her final-year project defence on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, after which she interacted with her supervisor and fellow students before returning to her off-campus residence. The institution stated that she showed no visible signs of illness while on campus that day.
The university further disclosed that Grace had a documented history of asthma, with records indicating she had been receiving medical attention at the University’s Health Centre since her first year. Her last recorded visit to the health facility was on March 26, 2026.
Later that evening, following her return from a Christian fellowship, she reportedly complained of stomach pain before her condition deteriorated. According to accounts from her roommate and coursemate, efforts to seek urgent medical attention were complicated by movement restrictions associated with the Oro ritual taking place within the Ifetedo community.
She was eventually transported by motorcycle to the Community Health Centre in Ikija, Ifetedo, where she reportedly lost consciousness. Lecturers and university officials were immediately informed and arrived at the facility, where medical personnel confirmed her passing.
For further confirmation, Grace was taken to Goshen Specialist Hospital, Ondo, where doctors certified her dead on arrival. Her remains were subsequently deposited at Divine Haven Funeral Home in Ondo.
UNIOSUN management clarified that the late student was not taken to the University’s Medical Centre during the emergency and reiterated that she had a pre-existing medical condition documented in the institution’s health records.
The university expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, her classmates, and the entire Modakeke community, describing Grace as a dedicated student whose life and aspirations reflected great promise.
As tributes continue to pour in, friends and loved ones have remembered Grace Osunlakin as a brilliant, humble, and determined young woman whose dreams were tragically cut short. Her passing remains a painful loss to her family, the university community, and all who knew her.
