The African Democratic Congress (ADC), Lagos State Chapter, has strongly condemned the disruption of a peaceful political event in Lagos, describing the incident as an unfortunate assault on democratic principles and citizens’ constitutional rights.

According to the party, the Lagos State Police Command had earlier approved a formal request by the Labour Party to hold an event at their party office. However, the approval was suddenly withdrawn after it became known that the programme involved the defection of members to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Disturbingly, shortly after the permit was cancelled, suspected APC thugs reportedly received the same information and mobilised to the venue, where they disrupted the gathering, creating tension and denying citizens the right to freely associate and express their political choices.

Reacting to the incident, Ife Salako, ADC Lagos, described the development as alarming and unacceptable in a democratic society.

“This action raises serious concerns about the neutrality of state institutions and the safety of opposition parties in Lagos State. Democracy thrives on freedom of choice, not intimidation or suppression,” Salako said.

The ADC Lagos State Chapter emphasized that political defection is a legitimate and lawful process, protected under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and must not be criminalized or met with violence.

    The party called on:

    • The Nigeria Police Force to remain professional, impartial, and committed to the rule of law.
    • Relevant security agencies to investigate the disruption and bring those responsible to justice.
    • Well-meaning Nigerians, civil society groups, and the international community to closely monitor political developments in Lagos State.

ADC Lagos reassured its members and supporters that the party remains peaceful, law-abiding, and committed to democratic engagement, adding that intimidation will not deter its growing support base across the state.

“ADC will continue to stand firm for justice, fairness, and true democracy. Lagos belongs to all Nigerians, and no party has a monopoly on political participation,” the statement concluded.
