
The Chairman of the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mrs. Victoria Mopelola Peregrino, on Monday, 9th February 2026, joined other distinguished education stakeholders to receive and celebrate the overall winner and runner-up of the 21st edition of the Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition.
The reception took place at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, The Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, in an atmosphere of pride, encouragement, and academic excellence.
Emerging as the overall winner of the prestigious competition was Miss Esther Etiyeyemonu of Lagos State Senior Model College, Igbokuta, who was crowned the “One Day Governor”. She was closely followed by Miss Awoyemi Dorcas of Ikosi Senior High School, Ketu, who emerged as the runner-up and was honoured with the title of “Deputy Governor” for the day.
Speaking at the event, Mrs. Peregrino congratulated the brilliant students for their outstanding performances, describing their achievements as a reflection of dedication, discipline, and the effectiveness of Lagos State’s investment in quality education. She commended their teachers, parents, and school administrators for nurturing academic excellence and building confidence in the learners.
The TESCOM Chairman reaffirmed the commitment of the Lagos State Government to promoting literacy, intellectual competitiveness, and co-curricular activities that sharpen students’ skills beyond the classroom. She noted that platforms such as the Spelling Bee Competition help to identify and groom future leaders while inspiring other students to strive for excellence.
Officials of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, school administrators, teachers, and other dignitaries present at the event also applauded the winners and encouraged students across the state to embrace reading, spelling, and continuous learning.
The event concluded with warm congratulations to the winners and a renewed call for sustained support for educational initiatives that empower young minds across Lagos State.
