2027 General Elections: INEC Fixes February 20 for Presidential, NASS Polls; March 6 for Governorship, State Assembly

In a major step toward consolidating Nigeria’s democratic journey, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the dates for the 2027 General Elections. Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Friday, the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, formally released the Notice of Election alongside the Timetable and Schedule of Activities, fixing:

• Presidential & National Assembly Elections – February 20, 2027
• Governorship & State Houses of Assembly Elections – March 6, 2027

Describing the announcement as “a significant milestone in our democratic journey,” the INEC Chairman emphasized that the publication of the Notice strictly complies with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which mandates that election notices be issued not later than 360 days before the election date.

Offices to Be Contested

The 2027 General Elections will cover the offices of:

• President and Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
• Governors and Deputy Governors (except in Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Ondo and Osun States)
• Members of the Senate
• Members of the House of Representatives
• Members of the State Houses of Assembly

Reaffirming INEC’s Constitutional Authority

Prof. Amupitan addressed recent speculation regarding election dates, noting that some individuals had circulated unofficial schedules in an attempt to preempt the Commission. “For some time now, this has been a subject of speculation,” he stated, reaffirming that INEC remains the only constitutional body empowered to fix election dates in Nigeria. He further disclosed that the Commission is closely monitoring proposed amendments to the Electoral Act currently before the National Assembly. However, INEC will continue to operate strictly within the framework of the existing law until any amendments are formally enacted.

Key Timetable Highlights

Under the approved schedule:

• Political party primaries must hold within the statutory period.
• Submission of nomination forms must comply strictly with designated timelines.
• Campaigns will commence as stipulated by law and end 24 hours before Election Day.

The Commission warned that it will not hesitate to enforce compliance with all electoral laws and regulations.

Strategic Priorities for 2027

Reaffirming INEC’s independence and neutrality, the Chairman outlined critical focus areas for the 2027 polls, including:

• Expanded deployment of technology to enhance transparency;
• Continuous cleaning and updating of the National Register of Voters;
• Strengthened collaboration with security agencies for peaceful elections;

Describing the 2027 General Elections as a shared national duty, Prof. Amupitan appealed to government institutions, the media, civil society organizations, security agencies, and all Nigerians to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process. “As we commence this important national exercise, I assure Nigerians that the Commission is fully prepared and determined to deliver elections that reflect the sovereign will of the people,” he declared.
