Lagostrend report that the Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peaceful coexistence, civic responsibility, and stronger collaboration between young people and law enforcement agencies with the successful hosting of the Political Intellectual Summit and Youth-Police Engagement Programme in Epe.
The summit, organised by the Lagos State Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement (OPL&CE) in collaboration with the Lagos State Bureau of the Public Defender (BPD), brought together government officials, officers of the Nigeria Police Force, youth leaders, students, legal practitioners, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders at the Epe Divisional Police Headquarters.
The programme focused on strengthening mutual understanding, building trust, and improving relationships between the police and young residents while educating participants on citizens’ rights, lawful policing, democratic participation, and the legal framework guiding public protests in Nigeria.
Representing the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Engr. Sholabomi Shasore, the Deputy Director, Mr. Peter Adepeju, reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s dedication to fostering meaningful engagement between government institutions and citizens, particularly the youth. He noted that the initiative is designed to equip young people with the knowledge and leadership skills required to contribute positively to governance and community development.
Also speaking at the summit, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Dr. Afolabi Abiodun Tajudeen, who was represented by the Director of Citizens Engagement, Dr. Bobatunde Omotayo, described the programme as a strategic platform for promoting political awareness, civic education, peaceful conflict resolution, and responsible leadership among young people.
The Director of the Bureau of the Public Defender (BPD) also stressed the importance of constructive dialogue and collaboration between the police and the youth in sustaining peace, justice, and security across Lagos State. He encouraged participants to embrace lawful means of expressing their views while respecting the rights and responsibilities of every citizen.
Participants benefited from insightful lectures, interactive panel discussions, and networking sessions with policymakers, legal experts, security professionals, and civic leaders. Discussions centred on democratic values, community policing, human rights, and practical ways of strengthening trust between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.
The organisers noted that the summit aligns with the vision of the Lagos State Government to deepen civic engagement, protect citizens’ rights, promote justice, and encourage continuous dialogue between government institutions and the public.
