Concerns over the prolonged lack of electricity in several communities across Ibeju-Lekki have once again come to the forefront as Public Affairs Commentator and Good Governance Advocate, Otunba Ademola Akinnola, issued an open letter urging Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, to prioritize the restoration of power supply to affected residents.

According to Otunba Akinnola, more than 60 communities within the Ibeju-Lekki axis have reportedly remained without electricity for over 15 years, a situation he described as a major challenge to economic growth, education, healthcare delivery, and the overall wellbeing of residents.

He noted that the absence of electricity has placed significant hardship on families, students, artisans, traders, and small business owners who rely heavily on power supply for their daily activities. He emphasized that many residents spend substantial amounts on alternative sources of energy, while businesses continue to struggle due to high operating costs.

The advocate further highlighted the strategic importance of Ibeju-Lekki to the economic development of Lagos State and Nigeria, pointing to the presence of major investments such as the Dangote Refinery, Lekki Deep Sea Port, Lekki Free Trade Zone, and other industrial facilities situated within the area.

Otunba Akinnola stressed that while these landmark projects have contributed significantly to the state’s economic profile, surrounding host communities deserve to benefit from essential infrastructure and social amenities, including stable electricity.

He appealed to the Lagos State Government to urgently address the power challenges facing the coastal communities of Ibeju-Lekki, noting that access to electricity remains a fundamental requirement for sustainable development and improved living standards.

The call has added to growing discussions among residents and stakeholders on the need for accelerated infrastructure development in host communities that continue to play a vital role in Lagos State’s industrial and economic expansion.

Community leaders, residents, and development advocates have expressed hope that the concerns raised will receive prompt attention, leading to practical solutions that will improve the quality of life and unlock greater economic opportunities for the people of Ibeju-Lekki.

Otunba Ademola Akinnola, in his appeal, reiterated that the restoration of electricity would not only enhance socio-economic activities but also serve as a demonstration of inclusive governance and commitment to the welfare of the people.
