Oyo Assembly Approves Governor Makinde’s Annual Leave, Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal to Serve as Acting Governor
Lagostrend report that the Oyo State House of Assembly has approved Governor Seyi Makinde’s request to proceed on his annual leave, paving the way for Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal to assume office as Acting Governor during the period.
The approval was granted during Thursday’s plenary after lawmakers considered a formal letter from Governor Makinde, submitted in accordance with constitutional provisions requiring a governor to notify the State House of Assembly before embarking on an official leave.
According to the governor’s letter, the annual leave will commence on Monday, August 10, 2026, and end on September 11, 2026, with Governor Makinde scheduled to resume official duties on September 14, 2026.
The plenary session was presided over by Deputy Speaker Muhammed Fadeyi, who read the governor’s request before members. The House unanimously approved the leave, expressing confidence that governance in Oyo State would remain stable under the leadership of Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal.
Throughout the governor’s absence, Lawal will serve as Acting Governor, overseeing the day-to-day administration of the state and ensuring continuity in governance, public service delivery, and the implementation of government policies and programmes.
Speaking after the approval, Deputy Speaker Fadeyi wished Governor Makinde a peaceful and refreshing annual leave while reaffirming the Assembly’s commitment to maintaining a cordial and productive relationship with the executive arm of government. He also expressed confidence in the deputy governor’s capacity to provide effective leadership during the transition period.
The House further directed that its resolution approving the governor’s leave be officially communicated to the executive arm for necessary implementation.
The development comes as the Makinde administration continues to record significant political and legal milestones, including a recent Federal High Court judgment in favour of the Oyo State Government in its legal dispute with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Governor Makinde’s temporary transfer of authority reflects adherence to constitutional procedures and underscores the administration’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted governance and institutional stability in Oyo State.
