The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Atikulate movement has called on Nigerians to pay close attention to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s proposed approach to fuel subsidy reform, stressing that the former presidential candidate has not merely advocated for a return of subsidy but has also outlined a framework for implementing the policy.
The movement said the proposed plan includes detailed mechanisms for accountability and transparency, aimed at ensuring that any subsidy intervention is properly managed and delivers tangible benefits to Nigerians.
According to the group, Atiku’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Phrank Shaibu, presented key elements of the proposed framework during an X Space on Thursday, with further details expected to be made available in due course.
The ADC Atikulate movement urged Nigerians not to dismiss the proposal as impracticable, arguing that public policy can be designed and implemented through different approaches depending on the objectives, mechanisms and safeguards put in place.
“Policy implementation does not have a single formula, and Tinubu and his men are not the only people who know how policies work,” the movement said, insisting that alternative policy ideas deserve to be examined on their merits rather than rejected outright.
The group maintained that the central issue should be whether a proposed policy can improve the welfare of Nigerians while maintaining strong safeguards against abuse, waste and corruption.
It therefore encouraged Nigerians, civil society groups, policy experts and other stakeholders to critically examine Atiku’s proposal when the full details are released, particularly its accountability, transparency and implementation mechanisms.
The ADC Atikulate movement expressed confidence that an open and informed national conversation on subsidy policy would help Nigerians better understand the available alternatives and make informed choices about the country’s economic direction.
