The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced a significant adjustment to the timetable for the 2027 General Elections, moving the Presidential and National Assembly elections to January 2027, while Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will now hold in February 2027.
According to the Commission, the revised schedule is aimed at ensuring full compliance with statutory requirements under the Electoral Act and to provide adequate time for critical pre-election processes, including party primaries, candidate nominations, campaigns, and dispute resolution mechanisms.
Under the new arrangement:
- 🗳️ Presidential & National Assembly Elections – January 2027
- 🗳️ Governorship & State Assembly Elections – February 2027
INEC emphasized that the adjustment reflects its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process through improved planning, transparency, and adherence to the rule of law. The Commission reassured political parties, stakeholders, and the electorate that the updated timeline will allow for better coordination of logistics, voter education, and election management nationwide.
The electoral body also called on political parties to strictly comply with the revised timetable once formally published, urging early preparations to ensure seamless primaries and candidate submissions.
Observers say the move could enhance operational efficiency by creating a more structured electoral calendar and allowing for improved distribution of materials and personnel across the country.
As preparations intensify, INEC reiterated its pledge to conduct free, fair, credible, and transparent elections that reflect the will of the Nigerian people.
Further details on the comprehensive electoral timetable are expected to be released in due course.
