The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to public safety, urban order, and environmental sanitation with the enforcement of a ban on street begging and the washing of vehicles in traffic across the state.

The move is part of broader efforts to reduce traffic congestion, curb environmental degradation, and eliminate activities that pose risks to road users and pedestrians. Street begging and roadside vehicle washing have been identified as practices that obstruct traffic flow, endanger lives, and undermine the state’s vision of a clean, secure, and well-organized мегacity.

According to the government, individuals who engage in street begging—often in busy intersections and highways—as well as those washing vehicles amid moving traffic, expose themselves and motorists to avoidable accidents. These activities also contribute to traffic delays and compromise the overall aesthetic and environmental standards of the city.

The state government emphasized that the ban is not intended to punish the vulnerable but to protect lives and promote dignity. Relevant agencies have been directed to work collaboratively with social welfare departments to identify, rehabilitate, and empower vulnerable persons through structured support programs, skills acquisition initiatives, and reintegration schemes.

Motorists and residents have been urged to cooperate with enforcement agencies by avoiding the patronage of roadside car washers in traffic and refraining from giving alms on the highways, as such actions inadvertently encourage unsafe practices.

The Lagos State Government reassured residents of its resolve to enforce the ban in a humane and lawful manner, while continuing to invest in policies and programs that promote economic inclusion, road safety, and a cleaner urban environment.

Residents are encouraged to report violations through appropriate government channels and to support ongoing efforts aimed at making Lagos safer, cleaner, and more livable for all.
