The Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, has commemorated the 2026 International Day of Education, reaffirming the State Government’s unwavering commitment to sustainable education reforms, youth empowerment, and improved learning outcomes across public schools.

Speaking in commemoration of the global event themed “The Power of Youth in Co-creating Education,” the Commissioner highlighted the strategic steps being taken by the Lagos State Government to ensure quality, accessible, inclusive, and safe education for all learners. He noted that these efforts are in line with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) and the T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s administration.

“Our programmes reflect a comprehensive, statewide investment in expanding access, improving quality, and modernising public education infrastructure,” Alli-Balogun stated.

The Commissioner outlined several key initiatives undertaken by the Ministry, including continuous capacity-building workshops for teachers, the construction of new classroom blocks, rehabilitation of existing facilities, and the commissioning of ultra-modern classroom projects across the State. He described the payment of West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC) fees for students as a game-changer that has eased financial burdens on families and improved student participation.

He further noted the expansion of digital learning and innovation through initiatives such as EKO EXCEL, the Eko Learners’ Support Programme, and other technology-driven interventions designed to enhance teaching and learning outcomes.

Addressing inclusiveness, Alli-Balogun disclosed that the State Government has strengthened policies and frameworks to support learners with disabilities and vulnerable groups, including expanded scholarships, targeted inclusion support, and the upgrade and renovation of Inclusive School infrastructure to reduce learning barriers and promote equal access to education.

On safety and student wellbeing, the Commissioner emphasized that the Sanwo-Olu administration has implemented robust measures to ensure safe learning environments. These include child protection policies, safeguarding training, advocacy against abuse and exploitation, as well as regular safety awareness programmes, fire drills, and strict enforcement of laboratory safety regulations in schools.

He added that planning and safety monitoring have been enhanced through the adoption of a unified academic calendar, fostering a school culture that prioritises risk prevention, learner protection, and overall wellbeing.

Reiterating the Ministry’s focus, Alli-Balogun affirmed that the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education remains committed to sustainable reforms, enduring achievements, and continuous efforts aimed at improving learning outcomes across public schools.

On behalf of the Lagos State Government, the Commissioner wished all learners a Happy International Day of Education, urging young people to remain active partners in shaping the future of education.

The International Day of Education, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly, is observed annually on January 24 to celebrate education’s critical role in peace and development, anchored on four pillars: learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together, and learning to be.
