LAGOSTREND Report that the Education District VI has successfully hosted a Capacity Building Training for Physical and Health Education (PHE) teachers, reaffirming its commitment to improving teaching quality and promoting the holistic development of students across the district.

Delivering her remarks at the programme, the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Education District VI, Mrs. Mojisola Christiana Yusuff, commended the foresight and dedication of the organisers for prioritising professional growth among educators. She urged PHE teachers to remain updated on international sports rules and best practices, noting that such global standards, when effectively integrated into classroom instruction, would greatly benefit students and contribute to national development.

Mrs. Yusuff further encouraged schools to organise regular inter- and intra-school sporting activities, including indoor games, as a means of enhancing critical thinking, vocabulary development, academic performance, and overall physical fitness among learners.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Acting Director, Co-curricular, Science and Technology, District VI, Mrs. Osiyemi F. M., underscored the importance of continuous professional development for educators. She described teachers as key drivers in shaping students’ physical fitness, health awareness, discipline, teamwork, and lifelong wellness habits.

According to her, emerging health challenges, advances in sports science, and evolving teaching methodologies make it imperative for PHE teachers to continually update their skills and knowledge to remain effective and relevant in the education system.

During the training sessions, facilitators guided participants through the core objectives of the programme, with emphasis on the evolving role of the modern PHE teacher. Key focus areas included emerging trends in athletics, teamwork, ethical standards in sports, and practical action planning for effective lesson delivery. Participants were also encouraged to cascade the knowledge gained to colleagues and relevant stakeholders, thereby strengthening institutional capacity and organisational growth.

At the conclusion of the programme, participants are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of PHE concepts and skills, apply newly acquired strategies effectively in classrooms and on the field, exhibit greater confidence, initiative, and responsibility in their duties, embrace continuous learning and self-development, and translate acquired knowledge into practical, real-life solutions that address community needs.

This initiative further underscores Education District VI’s unwavering commitment to capacity building and the continuous professional development of Physical and Health Education teachers, in line with its broader goal of delivering quality education and nurturing well-rounded learners.
