The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State is grappling with one of the most significant internal crises in its history following the conduct of parallel ward congresses by rival factions within the party.

According to reports by Daily Post, the congresses, held across the 23 local government areas of the state, resulted in the emergence of separate sets of ward executives aligned with different political leaders, thereby deepening divisions within the ruling party.

The parallel exercises were reportedly organised by factions loyal to Governor Hyacinth Alia and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume. Both camps are said to have mobilised supporters across the state, culminating in the production of two distinct leadership structures at the ward level.

Party stakeholders have expressed concern that the development could undermine unity and weaken the APC’s grassroots structure in Benue if not urgently addressed. Political observers note that ward congresses form the foundation of the party’s organisational framework, making any division at that level particularly consequential.

The crisis is seen as a potential threat to the party’s cohesion as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 general elections. Analysts warn that prolonged factional disputes could affect the APC’s electoral strength in a state considered politically strategic in Nigeria’s North-Central region.

Efforts are reportedly underway by national party leaders to reconcile the aggrieved factions and ensure a harmonised structure that reflects the collective interest of members. Calls have also intensified for dialogue, compromise, and adherence to the party’s constitution to prevent further escalation.

As the situation unfolds, party faithful and political watchers alike await decisive intervention from the national leadership to restore unity, stability, and confidence within the Benue APC.
