Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has advised prominent human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, to exercise restraint and ensure due diligence before making public comments on national issues.
The Minister made this known on Sunday while addressing journalists shortly after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Wike emphasized the importance of responsible public discourse, particularly from respected legal minds and senior advocates whose opinions often shape public perception and national debate. According to him, public figures must make it a priority to verify facts and obtain accurate information before making pronouncements on sensitive matters.
He noted that while constructive criticism remains an essential part of democracy, such interventions must be grounded in verified facts to avoid misleading the public or escalating unnecessary controversies.
“As leaders and opinion shapers, we must always ensure that our statements are factual and balanced,” Wike stated. “It is important not to comment on every issue without first confirming the authenticity of the information available.”
The FCT Minister reiterated his commitment to transparency and open engagement, stressing that government officials remain accountable to Nigerians and welcome constructive engagement rooted in truth and fairness.
Wike’s remarks have since sparked conversations across political and legal circles, highlighting the ongoing dialogue about responsible commentary, accountability, and the role of public intellectuals in Nigeria’s democratic landscape.
