The Nigerian entertainment industry has taken another significant step toward protecting intellectual property rights as the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) arraigned the Chief Executive Officer of NetNaija Media Enterprises, Emmanuel Analike, over alleged copyright infringement.

Analike, the CEO of the popular online movie platform NetNaija Media Enterprises, was brought before the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Wednesday to face multiple counts of alleged violations of Nigeria’s copyright laws.

According to the NCC, the charges border on the alleged possession, reproduction, distribution, and public availability of pirated movies and music through the NetNaija platform. The commission stated that these actions are in contravention of Section 44(1)(a) of the Copyright Act 2022, which protects creators and rights holders against unauthorized reproduction and distribution of their works.

During the court proceedings, Analike pleaded not guilty to all charges filed against him.

Presiding over the case, Justice Suleiman Liman ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing and ruling on his bail application. The court adjourned further proceedings to March 9, 2026.

The Nigerian Copyright Commission noted that the case forms part of ongoing nationwide efforts to tackle digital piracy and safeguard Nigeria’s creative and entertainment industries from economic losses caused by unauthorized distribution of copyrighted content.

Industry stakeholders have continued to call for stronger enforcement of copyright laws, noting that protecting intellectual property is critical to sustaining the growth of Nigeria’s vibrant film and music sectors.

Observers say the outcome of the case could mark a significant moment in Nigeria’s campaign against online piracy and reinforce the importance of respecting intellectual property rights in the digital age.
