Lagostrend report that In a significant demonstration of his administration’s commitment to education and human capital development, the Executive Chairman of Olorunda Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Ajose Peter Kumayon, has officially flagged off the council’s 2026 Back-to-School Programme, commencing the distribution of school bags, exercise books, and other essential writing materials to pupils across primary schools within the council area.
The initiative, which began at Araromi Ale Primary School, Araromi Ola Community, is aimed at easing the financial burden on parents, guardians, and sponsors as schools resume for a new academic session. The programme forms part of the chairman’s RESHAPE Agenda, with a strong focus on improving access to quality education and supporting the academic aspirations of young learners.
The first phase of the distribution exercise covered Ansar-U-Deen Primary School I, II and III in Araromi Ale, as well as Morogbo Primary School, providing hundreds of pupils with educational materials needed for effective learning. In a further show of commitment, Hon. Kumayon also extended the intervention to Morogbo Junior Grammar School, a newly established secondary school, where each student received four exercise books during an unscheduled visit.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, Hon. Kumayon emphasized that the programme was designed to provide practical relief for families facing the increasing cost of educational materials. He noted that school bags, exercise books, and other learning resources often place significant pressure on household finances, especially at the beginning of a new academic session.
According to the chairman, the Back-to-School Programme is one of several educational interventions implemented by his administration. He highlighted ongoing support for indigent students through the provision of GCE and UTME forms, regular engagement with schools across both upland and riverine communities to identify and address their needs, and the council’s Bursary Award Scheme, which supports eligible Olorunda indigenes pursuing undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degrees.
Addressing the pupils, Hon. Kumayon encouraged them to make good use of the materials provided, remain disciplined, and stay focused on their studies.
> “Take good care of your bags, books, and writing materials. Be disciplined, focused, and avoid distractions. Never allow your present circumstances to determine your future,” he advised.
The initiative received widespread commendation from education stakeholders and community leaders. The Education Secretary, Mr. Hontonyon Joel Viyon, described the programme as a timely and impactful intervention that would benefit both pupils and their families. He also called for continued improvements in school infrastructure, security, and teacher welfare, particularly in riverine communities.
Similarly, the Baale of Araromi Ola, Chief Temitope Adele Agemo, praised the chairman for bringing the programme to the community and urged sustained collaboration among government, traditional institutions, and community stakeholders to further strengthen educational development at the grassroots.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Bonu John, also lauded the administration for prioritizing education, noting that direct interventions aimed at pupils contribute significantly to creating a more conducive learning environment.
One of the beneficiaries, Abdulganiyu Fatimu, a pupil of ABS Araromi Ale School 2, expressed gratitude to the council chairman, stating that the educational materials would greatly support pupils in their academic pursuits.
The flag-off ceremony attracted a large gathering of government officials, education stakeholders, traditional rulers, teachers, and community leaders, including the Vice Chairman, Hon. Bolaji Adele Solomon; Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Ashame Wahab Ayilere; Supervisor for Education, Hon. Afeez Bankole; councillors, executive council members, and representatives of the education sector.
As the distribution exercise continues across more than 24 primary schools in Olorunda LCDA, the initiative underscores the administration’s unwavering commitment to investing in the future of children and ensuring that every pupil has the tools necessary to succeed academically.
