The Akodo community in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State has stepped forward with urgent concerns and growing unrest over what residents are describing as the alleged imposition of a traditional ruler — an action they say contradicts established customs, processes, and community consent.

At a press briefing convened by local youth leaders, community representatives, and stakeholders, speakers outlined their dissatisfaction and objection to what they describe as the unilateral installation of a monarch HRM Oba Akeem Olokodano without the full endorsement of Akodo’s indigenous structures and chieftaincy practices.

Community Stance and Call for Intervention
Representatives of the Akodo youth and resident associations told lagostrend that:

The current dispute is not a call for violence, but rather a demand for respect of age-long traditional processes that guide the selection and installation of rulers in the community.

A genuine traditional appointment must reflect the collective will of the indigenes and kingmakers, not external pressure or unilateral decisions.

The community is appealing for immediate government and traditional council intervention to avert escalation and promote peace.

Youth spokespersons reiterated that there have been local petitions and appeals made through social media platforms and direct community communication channels, which stress the need for due process and transparency in matters of traditional leadership.

    Historical Context and Underlying Issues
While the current kingship dispute is front-page news today, Akodo has long been at the centre of complex social and legal dynamics — including broader land ownership and community rights disputes that involve multiple families and litigations in Lagos courts. These historic land and title complexities have, in recent years, heightened sensitivities over community autonomy in internal affairs.

    Reactions and Broader Implications
Community leaders and elders present at the press briefing called on:

Lagos State Government authorities to respect local customs and ensure that any traditional appointments align with community consensus and legal frameworks.

The Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to facilitate mediation between contesting parties and relevant kingmakers.

The Akodo Community has issued an urgent call to the Lagos State Government and relevant traditional authorities to call HRM Oba Akeem Olokodano to order over allegations that his actions are undermining the collective interest of the community.

Community leaders, elders, youths, and concerned stakeholders accuse the monarch of selling or compromising community assets without consultation or consent, warning that such actions are fueling tension and unrest in Akodo.

In a strong statement, the community demanded that HRM Oba Akeem Olokodano immediately halt all activities affecting communal land and heritage and present himself for an open dialogue with recognized community representatives.

The Akodo people stressed that dialogue and due process remain the only acceptable path to peace, urging swift government intervention to prevent escalation and restore trust in traditional leadership.

As of the time of filing this report, no official response has been issued by HRM Oba Akeem Olokodano or the Lagos State Government.
