A compelling story of transparency, courage, and institutional accountability has emerged from the headquarters of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), following the intervention of its Registrar, Ishaq Oloyede, in an alleged case of irregular university admission.
Dr. Muyiwa Kayode, father of a high-performing candidate who scored an impressive 333 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), has narrated how his son was initially denied admission into Medicine and Surgery despite meeting all merit requirements.
A Shocking Twist in the Admission Process
According to Dr. Kayode, his son’s name did not appear on the university’s admission list, despite his outstanding performance. Rather than being offered admission into Medicine and Surgery, the candidate was reportedly advised to accept Microbiology.
Determined to seek clarity, Dr. Kayode approached the university’s Registrar but was informed that Microbiology was the best alternative available. Dissatisfied with the response, he escalated the matter to the JAMB headquarters in Abuja.
Swift Action at JAMB Headquarters
At JAMB, Prof. Oloyede reportedly requested the candidate’s details and reviewed the admission records directly on his system. Upon assessment, it was revealed that the candidate ranked third on the merit list for Medicine and Surgery in the institution, behind candidates who scored 348 and 334 respectively.
However, none of the three top-performing candidates had been included in the official admission list.
Expressing deep concern, Prof. Oloyede emphasized the importance of merit-based admissions and due process, describing the situation as unacceptable. He immediately placed a call to the Vice Chancellor of the institution, reportedly demanding an explanation and urging immediate corrective action.
Immediate Correction and Restoration of Merit
Following the intervention, the university management acknowledged what was described as an “error of oversight” and assured that necessary corrections would be made.
Within 24 hours, the candidate’s name, alongside those of the other two top scorers, appeared on the university’s admission portal — correctly ranked as first, second, and third based on their UTME scores.
From Near Denial to Academic Excellence
Today, the once-overlooked candidate is in 400 Level Medicine and Surgery and has distinguished himself academically, reportedly topping his class with an outstanding GPA of 4.85.
This remarkable turnaround not only underscores the importance of vigilance in the admission process but also highlights the critical role of oversight institutions in safeguarding merit and fairness.
