The Lagos State Government has once again called on residents and visitors across the state to desist from the practice of open defecation, emphasizing the need for collective responsibility in maintaining a healthy, safe, and hygienic environment.

In a renewed public health advisory, the government stressed that open defecation poses serious environmental and health risks, including the spread of preventable diseases and contamination of water sources. Authorities therefore urged citizens to adopt proper sanitation practices by making use of available toilet facilities in homes, public places, markets, and workplaces.

The state government noted that Lagos, as one of Africa’s fastest-growing megacities, must uphold high standards of sanitation and environmental cleanliness. According to officials, eliminating open defecation is a critical step toward protecting public health, preserving human dignity, and ensuring a sustainable urban environment for present and future generations.

Residents were reminded that maintaining proper sanitation is not only a civic responsibility but also a sign of respect for fellow citizens and the community at large. The government encouraged landlords, market leaders, transport operators, and community associations to ensure the availability and proper maintenance of toilet facilities within their premises.

The administration reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening sanitation infrastructure, public awareness campaigns, and enforcement measures aimed at achieving a cleaner and healthier Lagos.

The government further appealed to all residents and visitors to join hands in building a hygienic and environmentally responsible society by putting an end to open defecation and embracing a culture of cleanliness.

“Choose health, respect, and a cleaner environment for Lagos,” the statement concluded.
