Lagos to Roll Out Special Vehicle Number Plates for Persons with Disabilities
The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to introduce specialised vehicle number plates for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as part of its commitment to promoting inclusion, accessibility, and improved mobility across the state.
The proposed initiative was the subject of discussions during a courtesy visit by the management of the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) to the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), where both agencies explored collaborative strategies for the development and implementation of the disability-friendly vehicle identification system.
Speaking during the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the MVAA, Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, described the initiative as a significant milestone in Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of building “A Greater Lagos That Leaves No One Behind.”
According to him, the specialised number plates will enhance the recognition of persons with disabilities, improve accessibility, and make movement across the state more convenient, while reinforcing the principles of inclusive governance.
Muri-Okunola disclosed that the agency had already commenced discussions with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on the proposed initiative and would begin the necessary administrative procedures in close partnership with LASODA to ensure its successful implementation.
Earlier, the General Manager of LASODA, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, explained that the visit was aimed at initiating strategic discussions on introducing customised vehicle number plates for persons with disabilities in Lagos State.
She noted that the initiative is expected to cover all categories of persons with disabilities, including parents of children with disabilities and their caregivers, adding that the identification system would improve accessibility, recognition, and support for members of the disability community.
Oyetunde-Lawal further stated that the proposed number plates demonstrate the Lagos State Government’s unwavering commitment to building a more inclusive society where persons with disabilities are respected, recognised, and empowered to participate fully in all aspects of life.
She also urged stakeholders to embrace inclusion as a collective responsibility and support policies that promote the rights, welfare, and equal opportunities of persons with disabilities.
Both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to driving the initiative, which aligns with the provisions of the Lagos State Special People’s Law establishing LASODA to safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities, eliminate discrimination, and promote equal opportunities across all sectors.
The meeting was attended by directors and senior management staff of both LASODA and the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency.
