A man has reportedly been arrested in Abuja over the alleged killing of his mother following a dispute linked to a reported ₦40 million family inheritance.
The incident, which has generated widespread concern and reactions across social media, was first reported by the Hausa-language news platform Rariya. However, security authorities have yet to officially confirm the details of the case.
According to reports, the suspect allegedly attacked his mother, identified as Nana, after she declined his request to release part of a family inheritance reportedly valued at ₦40 million. The funds were said to have been left behind by the family’s late patriarch.
Sources claim the suspect intended to use the money to finance travel abroad, but his mother reportedly refused, expressing concerns over the proposed use of the inheritance.
Although the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, reports indicate it occurred earlier in the week. The suspect was later taken into custody by security operatives. There are conflicting reports regarding the agency responsible for the arrest, with some accounts attributing it to the Department of State Services (DSS). As of press time, no official statement has been issued to confirm the arrest or identify the investigating agency.
Unverified reports further allege that the suspect remained inside the family residence for several days after the incident without informing authorities before eventually being apprehended. These claims have not been independently verified.
The deceased was reportedly laid to rest in Abuja in accordance with Islamic funeral rites at the National Mosque.
The tragic incident has sparked widespread condemnation and renewed calls for stronger family conflict resolution mechanisms, mental health awareness, and justice for victims of domestic violence. Many Nigerians have also urged security agencies to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to provide an official account to clarify the conflicting reports and determine the facts surrounding the alleged crime.
