The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has officially declared three Senate seats vacant, paving the way for fresh democratic participation in the affected constituencies.
The announcement was made during a plenary session of the Senate, where the Senate President emphasized the importance of upholding constitutional provisions and ensuring that all Nigerians are adequately represented in the National Assembly.
Following the declaration, the Senate directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct by-elections in the impacted senatorial districts to fill the vacant positions.
Senator Akpabio noted that the move reflects the Senate’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and maintaining the integrity of Nigeria’s legislative process. He assured Nigerians that due process would be followed to ensure free, fair, and credible elections.
The forthcoming by-elections are expected to provide constituents in the affected areas with an opportunity to elect new representatives who will champion their interests at the federal level.
Political observers have described the development as a positive step toward reinforcing democratic governance and ensuring continuous representation across all regions of the country.
INEC is expected to announce the timetable and guidelines for the by-elections in due course.
